Kinetic Orchestra: Silence

Kinetic Orchestra: Silence

Silence takes choreographer Jarkko Mandelin’s trademark combination of contemporary dance, acrobatics and martial arts choreography and pushes it even further.

“Silence is a dance performance inspired by the performance of classical music. The dance company forms an orchestra in the tradition of classical music and does its utmost to bring the elements of the concert to life. Silence is the moment when the concerto ends, the world created disappears and the preparation for the next one begins.”

Jarkko Mandelin is a contemporary dance choreographer trained in classical ballet and an internationally active instructor. He has created his own recognisable style and is particularly known as a developer of contemporary dance partnering and floor technique. Mandelin is the founder and artistic director of the Kinetic Orchestra dance company. Mandelin’s previous work (Gravity) was performed at Helsinki City Theatre for two seasons in 2021 and 2023 to sold-out audiences.

Silence is a collaboration between Helsinki City Theatre, Kinetic Orchestra and Dance Theatre Minimi, with the support of the New Classics Fund.

Reviews:

“At times the dancers manage to trick my brain into believing that their movements produce music. — When a dancer moves their hand, sound creeps into the space. This is the quiet but subversive core of Silence: it turns cause-effect relationships inside out and defies the direction of time.”
– Henna Raatikainen, Helsingin Sanomat

“Mandelin relies uncompromisingly on movement. His acrobatic and very physical movement language, which ingeniously utilizes the floor level and pair work, requires cooperation and trust in each other from the dancers. — Dance and music breathe together. When the music ends and silence begins, the movement produces sound, in the imagination. Insightful and successful!”
– Merja Koskiniemi, Kulttuuritoimitus

“If the intention of the creators of the performance was to create deep-seated joy and a long-lasting positive emotional state in the viewer, in my case that intention was realized to the maximum.”
– Matti Saarela, Kielipuolen päiväkirja
